How SurveyMonkey Automated Data Requests
SurveyMonkey provides an online survey tool for businesses and individuals to collect data from respondents. Established in 1999, the company has risen to the top of the survey industry and is the standard-bearer for cloud-based market research services. At some point, whether you realize it or not, you’ve probably taken a SurveyMonkey survey.
Finding a better analytics solution
SurveyMonkey discovered Periscope Data during the search process for a new analytics solution. They capture a lot of data that needs to be quickly dissected and were looking for a flexible way to visualize critical metrics that wouldn’t require too much manual work. They wanted to fully automate common data requests without needing an analyst to support the workload.
Robbie Allan, a Product Manager at SurveyMonkey, frequently encountered problems with his workflow, “we could spend hours a day answering questions using pivot tables in Excel and it just seemed totally insane.” He needed an analytics and dashboarding solution that sped up his workflow, but also integrated with AWS (Amazon Web Services) and a Postgres database. Then he discovered Periscope Data. “We came across you guys and suddenly it was just this really lovely instance where you guys did literally exactly what we wanted to do.” He was most intrigued by Periscope Data’s deep knowledge of Amazon Redshift clusters and the SQL editor with broad language support, “Periscope Data is easy to learn because it relies on SQL and not some janky new language.”
The road to automation
Transitioning to Periscope Data has given Robbie’s team the freedom to focus on more interesting work beyond than the tedium of building reports. After spending around 10 minutes setting up the Periscope Database Cache, Robbie and his team started creating dashboards to address the needs of departments across the company. Now anyone can access dashboards and dig into their data without breaking the product team’s workflow.
The majority of reporting needs were addressed by syncing their data to the Periscope Database Cache and creating dashboards that are updated automatically. Robbie’s team virtually eliminated the need to personally respond to every data request.
The change has been profound. Reports used to take three hours per request and involved multiple software packages to extract, chart, and deliver. “Now, it takes me zero hours because the requester can just look on the dashboard… so that’s kind of an improvement”.
Robbie sums up the impact Periscope Data has had on SurveyMonkey best: “I used to hire someone full-time that basically did what we now do with Periscope Data. With a combination of code automation plus you guys, the [previously] manual ETL and reporting role is now 100% automated and the analyst was reassigned.“
